    2 Kids, 8 Suitcases + 4 Backpacks {Part I}

    We made it!

    The Browns are alive and well in Doha, Qatar.

    Jet-lag is kicking our butts as we adapt to the time change and lifestyle.

    Before I begin fantasizing about how amazing it all is, I’d like to get right down to the nitty gritty honest stuff.

    I’ve had a lot of questions. The main one being WHY?

    Why on earth would we pack up our kids and take off to a different country?

    Theres a few reasons. I will list them and explain.

    1. Debt.
    2. Culture
    3. Growth

    There you have it. The number one reason why we would do this is the big bad ugly D word. I married into student loans PLUS we borrowed money from my parents so that Andrew could complete his teaching degree. We were lucky enough to consolidate the student loans into a lesser chunk but we felt like our heads were always below water trying to catch up.

    We need to lift the debt from our lives in order to move forward. It feels shameful and to be honest, down right embarrassing to admit but I’m really trying to be transparent here.

    It’s really important for us to introduce diversity and culture into the kids lives. They were both born in Kelowna, BC which is predominantly caucasian and wealthy. They’ve already seen people praying and we’ve heard the Athaan 5x daily {Call to prayer, thank you Sara for translating!} The apartment we have been placed at is located in a more moderate area of town. We are getting a more localized experience rather than living in the downtown core where it’s more common for expats to live.

    Growth only comes from change and stepping outside of your comfort zone. Nothing forces you to evolve more than travelling and experiencing new things in unknown territory. I’ve been digging deeper on a Spiritual level lately and travel gives me a connection to my souls root. I can’t quite explain it, but it just feels like home to me.

    So now that I’ve explained more about why we are embarking on this journey, I’ll save the rest for another post.

    To be continued…

    Lifestyle

    My [our] Story. {The very short version}

    I was born and raised in the GTA of Ontario. Mediocre in the arts and obsessed with photography, which is what I ended up studying post secondary. Once I graduated, I decided I NEEDED to see the world. Like, my heart was calling me. I knew in my bones I wanted a change.

    I moved to Australia by myself in April 2004 where I traveled up and down the coast picking up jobs and temporary homes along the way. I taught myself how to surf and continued taking photos for fun. I led a nomadic lifestyle, meeting life long friends along the way. After spending 6 weeks in Thailand, life brought me to the Western side of Canada. Thank you Caitlin Bryson, for letting me move into your 2 bedroom condo in Kelowna, British Columbia.

    I continued to meet amazing people including  Shanti, who I spent almost a decade working for. She was the ultimate boss lady who inspired me to work hard and dream big. The connection we share is like no other and I’m certain we knew each other in past lives.

    I met Andrew, my husband in 2007. We eventually realized we were meant to be together in September 2009, once he took a bus across Canada and went on his own adventure. We married in 2011 and swore we would travel somewhere “big”. ONE. DAY.

    We moved 4x together and then Hattie-Mae was born in 2013 and Holden, almost 3 years and 3 houses later in 2016.

    I decided I wasn’t going back to work and fell upon an opportunity in the beauty industry which led me to where I am today.

    The amount of personal growth I’ve gone through in the last 2.5 years has been paramount. Like…. HOW did I stumble across this opportunity and how have I changed so much? I really didn’t think it was possible. I have done everything from reading self help type of books, developing my spiritual path to speaking in public. Ha! If you knew me in the past, you likely wouldn’t believe it. I was the girl who barely spoke because I was so shy.

    One day in November 2018, I asked Andrew if he could find a job over seas. My heart wanted another change and it was about damn time we take our dream of travelling somewhere big to reality.

    He came home with a list of BC offshore schools. We narrowed it down to 2 countries. Vietnam and Qatar. The school wasn’t finished being built in Vietnam so he interviewed for Qatar.

    2 Skype interviews and less than a month later, he got the job.

    He signed the contract.

    We told the kids.

    We moved. Again.

    But this time we packed up all our shit and moved it into storage.

    Then we flew across the country to stay with my family for 6.5 weeks and drop off Koston- our 9 year old Jack Russel/Chihuahua.

    Our life is about to change in so many ways.

    One thing I’ve learned about traveling is that you are put in situations out of your comfort zone.

    This time, I won’t be alone. I can’t wait to experience this with Andrew and the kids.

    I’m excited to share our journey in Doha.

    Stay tuned. Xo, Kare.
